About arcminutes and degrees
A degree splits into 60 arcminutes (′), and each arcminute into 60 arcseconds (″). So divide arcminutes by 60 to get decimal degrees: 15′ is 0.25° and 45′ is 0.75°.
Arcminutes turn up in astronomy, telescope and binocular specs, eyesight tests, rifle scopes (where one minute of angle, MOA, is one arcminute) and in map coordinates written as degrees and minutes. Converting to decimal degrees is the step most mapping apps and spreadsheets need.
Examples
- 1 ′ (one MOA on a rifle scope, 1.047 in at 100 yards) is 0.0167 °
- 30 ′ (about the width of the full Moon in the sky) is 0.5 °
- 60 ′ is 1 °
- 5,400 ′ (a right angle) is 90 °
