How to calculate a power
- Enter the Base, the number being multiplied.
- Enter the Exponent. Negative values and fractions like 1/3 work.
- Read the result. Huge whole-number powers show the exact digits below.
Rules of exponents
| Rule | Example |
|---|---|
| xᵃ × xᵇ = xᵃ⁺ᵇ | 2³ × 2² = 2⁵ = 32 |
| xᵃ ÷ xᵇ = xᵃ⁻ᵇ | 5⁴ ÷ 5² = 5² = 25 |
| (xᵃ)ᵇ = xᵃᵇ | (3²)³ = 3⁶ = 729 |
| x⁰ = 1 | 7⁰ = 1 |
| x⁻ᵃ = 1 ÷ xᵃ | 10⁻² = 0.01 |
| x^(1/n) = ⁿ√x | 27^(1/3) = 3 |
Exact big numbers
Ordinary calculators switch to rounded scientific notation once a result passes about 16 digits. For whole-number bases and exponents this one keeps every digit, so 2¹⁰⁰ gives 1.26765060 × 10^30 at the top and all 31 digits, 1267650600228229401496703205376, in the Exact value row. Click the row to copy them. Results too big or too small for a calculator, such as 2⁻²⁰⁰⁰, are shown as a power of ten.
