About feet per second and miles per hour
A mile is 5,280 feet and an hour is 3,600 seconds, so 1 foot per second is 3,600 ÷ 5,280 = 15/22 mph, which is 0.681818. Multiply ft/s by 0.6818 to get mph. The neatest anchor is 88 ft/s, which is exactly 60 mph.
Physics problems, ballistics tables, fluid flow in pipes and fan or duct specs in US units often give speeds in feet per second. Converting to mph turns those figures into something you can picture. For a rough answer take two thirds of the ft/s figure, which comes out about 2% low.
Examples
- 4.4 ft/s (a walking pace of about 3 mph) is 3 mph
- 32.2 ft/s (free fall after one second, ignoring air drag) is 21.95 mph
- 88 ft/s (exactly 60 mph) is 60 mph
- 1,125 ft/s (the speed of sound in air at 20 °C) is 767.05 mph
