How to use the color name list
- Browse by color family with the buttons, or type a name or part of a hex code in the filter.
- Click a name, HEX code or RGB value to copy it.
- Use the name directly in CSS, for example
color: steelblue;.
The 16 basic colors
HTML 4 defined 16 color names that every browser has always understood: black, silver, gray, white, maroon, red, purple, fuchsia, green, lime, olive, yellow, navy, blue, teal and aqua. The rest came later from the X11 color list.
Names, HEX or RGB?
Names are easy to read in code but there are only 148 of them. For brand colors and exact shades, use HEX (#1f2430) or rgb() and hsl(), which can express any color. The color converter turns any of these into the others.
