How to make a meme
- Drop in a picture, choose a file or paste a screenshot straight from your clipboard.
- Type your Top text and Bottom text, then move the Text size slider until it fits.
- Download your meme and send it to the group chat.
How to write a meme that works
Many classic memes put the setup in the top line and the twist in the bottom line. Keep each line short. Keep each caption short. If it needs three lines, it probably needs a rewrite.
- Say it out loud. If it doesn’t sound funny, capital letters won’t help.
- Let the picture do half the work. The text should add something the image doesn’t already say.
- Specific beats general. “When the printer jams five minutes before the meeting” lands harder than “when things go wrong”.
Getting the picture right
Crop the image first so the face or object people should look at fills the frame, and leave some room at the top and bottom for text. A plain or blurry area there keeps the letters easy to read, though the black outline copes with most backgrounds.
The text size is a share of the picture’s shorter side, so it looks the same on a small screenshot or a big photo. If your meme is too heavy to send, compress it or choose JPG as the format.
