How to find the midpoint
- Enter the two endpoints (x₁, y₁) and (x₂, y₂), with z values for 3D if you need them.
- Read the midpoint: the average of the x values and the average of the y values.
- The distance between the points is shown too.
Example
The midpoint of (2, 3) and (8, 11) is ((2 + 8) ÷ 2, (3 + 11) ÷ 2) = (5, 7). The distance between them is √(36 + 64) = 10, so the midpoint is 5 from each end.
Uses
The midpoint is the center of a circle that has the two points as its diameter, the point where a perpendicular bisector crosses the segment and the halfway point between two places on a map grid. On a number line it’s just the average of the two numbers.
