Where the letters come from

Most of these styles exist because of math. In a formula, a bold 𝐱 and an italic 𝑥 can mean different things, so Unicode includes a block called Mathematical Alphanumeric Symbols with full alphabets in bold, italic, script, Fraktur, double-struck, sans-serif and monospace. Social media borrowed them because they paste as plain text.

The rest come from elsewhere. Bubble letters are Enclosed Alphanumerics. Wide text uses fullwidth forms made for mixing Latin letters into Chinese, Japanese and Korean text. Small caps are mostly letters from phonetic alphabets. Strikethrough and underline add a combining mark after each character, and upside down text uses look-alike letters such as ɐ and ǝ in reverse order.
